GIRL SCOUT “FALL FEST” ART EXPERIENCE

Calling all Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts and troop leaders – are you looking for interesting and engaging activities for your troop this fall? If so, our “Fall Festival” is a great opportunity for Girl Scouts ages 5-15 to earn arts & crafts badges while learning about different art forms from skilled and talented Art Center faculty. Scouts spend the day or half-day with us and learn new visual arts skills, create great art to take home and meet other girls from around the area with similar talents and interests.

Age Groups:
Group A: ages 5-7 (Daisy) (jump to Daisy classes)
Group B: ages 7-10 (Brownie) (jump to Brownie classes)
Group C: ages 10-15 (Junior / Senior) (jump to Junior/Senior classses)

Lunch and snacks are NOT provided by the Art Center. Students will take a 10-15 minute break during the 2.5 hour classes. Please bring a bag lunch for the lunch break.

Cost per person:
$25.00 per student for one AM or PM session
$40.00 per student for a combined AM & PM session and all-day classes

Please register for classes on, or before Friday, November 5th.

Payment is due upon registration. The Art Center accepts cash,
checks and Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Group A: ages 5-7 (Daisy)
Pop-Up Cards and Books
AM Class 9:30am – 12:00pm

(This class satisfies the requirements for the “Greeting Cards” activity)
In this class we will use basic paper engineering techniques to design and create cards and small books with parts that pop-up, flip, fold, twist and turn. Painting, drawing, stamping and collage techniques will be taught and colorful and fabulous handmade cards and books created.

Group A: ages 5-7 (Daisy)
Clay Creatures
AM Class 9:30am – 12:00pm
(This class satisfies the Daisy requirements for the “Working with Clay” activity)
Using the whimsical clay sculptures of local artist Mike Norman as inspiration, we will use basic ceramic handbuilding techniques to create colorful, textural and fun clay animal sculptures. Each participant will create a free-standing animal shaped bowl and an animal-inspired candlestick holder. Pinch, coil and additive ceramic techniques will be taught and projects clear glazed for finishing. Because of the bisque and glaze firing process, projects will need to be picked-up from the Art Center three weeks after the event (Saturday, Dec. 4) Please call beforehand to ensure that the projects are finished.

Group A: ages 5-7 (Daisy)
Sock Puppets and More…
PM Class 1:00pm – 3:30pm
(This class satisfies the requirements for the “Sock Puppet” activity)
In this fun mixed-media class we will create 2 different kinds of hand puppets. The first will be a sock puppet and the second a sculpted Model Magic stick puppet. A variety of arts and crafts materials will be used including; yarn, fabric, paint, markers, Model Magic, beads, foam shapes and chenille stems. We will look at and discuss various puppet styles and then design and create our own.

Group A: ages 5-7 (Daisy)
Pop-Up Self-Portraits
PM Class 1:00pm – 3:30pm
(This class satisfies the requirements for the “Me in Paper” activity)
In this class we will make a 3-dimensional “pop-up” painted self-portrait with various raised levels. Watercolor paper, foam core board, tag board, tempera paints and other arts and crafts materials will be used. Participants will be taught basic painting skills including; dry-brushing, wet-on-wet techniques, stamping, texturizing and stenciling. You’ve never seen a self-portrait quite like this!

Group B: ages 7-10 (Brownie)
Music in Art
AM Class 9:30am – 12:00pm
(Brownies: this class satisfies 6 requirements for the “Creative Composing” badge: #1-5 and #7)
In this class we will learn how to compose short stories, songs and skits. Handmade musical instruments, masks and props will be created using various arts and crafts techniques and processes. Short performances will be done for parents at the end of class.

Group B: ages 7-10 (Brownie)
Drawing to Painting
AM Class 9:30am – 12:00pm
(Brownies: this class satisfies all requirements for the “Drawing and Painting” badge: #1-8)
In this class we will experiment with different drawing and painting materials, styles and techniques. Graphite pencils, charcoal, pastels, pen & ink, watercolors, acrylics and colored pencils are the materials we will used and numerous multi-media art pieces created. A small collaborative mural will also be created and displayed at the Art Center.

Group B: ages 7-10 (Brownie)
Ceramic Sculpture
PM Class 1:00pm – 3:30pm
(Brownies: this class satisfies 8 requirements for the “Ceramics in Clay” badge: #1-8)
In this class students will use basic pinch, slab and coil handbuilding techniques to create a self-portrait bust sculpture and a decorative tile. Slips and low-fire clear glazes will be used for coloration and finishing. Because of the bisque and glaze firing process, projects will need to be picked-up from the Art Center three weeks after the event (Saturday, Dec. 4) Please call beforehand to ensure that the projects are finished.

Group B: ages 7-10 (Brownie)
Handmade Hand Bags
PM Class 1:00pm – 3:30pm
(Brownies: this class satisfies 6 requirements for the “Sew Simple” badge: #1-3, #5, #9 and #10)
In this class students will design and create a handmade hand bag perfect to use out on the town. Different bag examples will be shown and basic designs used as a jumping off point for students to create their own versions of functional and fun handbags! Students will learn basic pattern design, hand sewing, machine sewing and fiber embellishment techniques.

Group C: ages 10-15 (Junior / Senior)
Art & Architecture
All-day AM and PM Class 9:30am – 3:30pm
(Juniors: this class satisfies all requirements for the “Architecture” badge: #1-8)
Please join the D.E.M.O. Group (Design Education Modus Operandi) and U of M architecture students for this unique all-day class. Participants will learn about and discuss different architecture styles from around the world. We will create a sketchbook documenting some of these examples and then use them as inspiration to design our own garden, room and building. During class we will construct models using various found objects, foam core, tag board and cardboard among other arts and crafts materials.

Group C: ages 10-15 (Junior / Senior)
Project Runway
All-day AM and PM Class 9:30am – 3:30pm
(Juniors: this class satisfies all requirements for the “Art to Wear” badge)
Please bring 3 colored t-shirts and 1 pair of jeans to class for altering. In this class we will use our imaginations to design and create new fashions by deconstructing, reconstructing and recycling old garments, accessories and found objects (like Project Runway). Basic hand sewing, machine sewing, surface design, material alteration and embellishing techniques will be covered for two-four projects that push the limits of ordinary fashion.

Group C: ages 10-15 (Junior / Senior)
Visual Arts
AM Class 9:30am – 12:00pm
(Juniors: this class satisfies all requirements for the “Visual Arts” badge)
In this class students will learn about the basic foundational elements of visual arts; line, shape, value, texture and color. Projects will explore each of these elements alone, and in combination. Drawing, painting and collage processes will be used and numerous 2-dimensional art projects made.

Group C: ages 10-15 (Junior / Senior)
Theatre Arts
PM Class 1:00pm – 3:30pm
(Juniors: this class satisfies 6 requirements for the “Theatre” badge: #1-6)
Participants will learn basic theatre terminology, create their own short skits, design and construct set pieces, costumes, props, and more for a unique all-around collaborative experience. Invite your family and friends to view the final presentation and show off your theatrical talents. The final performance will be from 3:15-3:30pm.
