Multi-Media Paintings
One 1/2-day, $30 Members / $33 Non-members
In this class we will push the boundaries of traditional painting techniques by combining printmaking, collage, montage, textural elements and 3-dimensional elements into our paintings. Basic painting techniques will be taught and projects created on paper and tag board.

Come to the Art Center and experiment with various drawing, painting and sculpting techniques. Each class will focus on a different art medium and teacher directed projects will help to develop foundational art skills while encouraging self-expression and process exploration.

Eco-Friendly Art (Environmental Art)
One 1/2-day, $30 Members / $33 Non-members
In this class we will create art pieces with environmentally friendly materials and subject matter. Recycled cardboard, wood, wire, foam core, fabrics and various found objects will be used to create 2- and 3-dimensional art pieces that teach students about the environment, our effect on it and how to recycle common materials to make beautiful art pieces.

3-Dimensional Masks (Mixed-media)

In this class students will look at different masks from various cultures and discuss their purposes, materials and styles. Then we will design and create our own 3-dimensional masks using paper sculpting and other art making techniques. Tag board, cardboard, foam core and various arts and crafts materials will be used to create, color and embellish our masks.

Glorious Gardens (Mixed-media)
Three 1/2-days, $85 Members / $94 Non-members
In this fun multi-media class students will paint terra cotta pots, make handmade paper with flower seeds in it (to plant in our pots), create ceramic garden sculptures, wind chimes and make garden name tags. These projects will look great in any indoor or outdoor garden space.

Painting Basics
One 1/2-day, $30 Members / $33 Non-members
Have fun learning the many ways you can create great paintings. Starting with brushes and moving on to stamps, sponges, Q-tips, and other mark-making tools students will learn how to make dynamic and colorful pictures with paint. Color mixing and basic composition skills are also a part of this class.

Clay Lanterns (Ceramics)
One 1/2-day, $30 Members / $33 Non-members
Light up your home or yard with a ceramic lantern! Using basic slab and coil handbuilding techniques students will create a basic lantern shape and then cut out decorative holes to allow light through (from an LED light). Because of the bisque and glaze firing process, some projects will need to be picked up two-three weeks after the last class day. Projects not picked-up by Sept. 10 will be recycled.

Imagination Celebration (Mixed-media)

Are you still trying to decide what your favorite medium is? Or, are they all your favorites? In this fabulous class kids can experiment with a variety of artistic mediums such as drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture. Kids will learn basic art techniques and terminology and have many opportunities to explore their own creative processes and interests.

This class will take students on a whirlwind adventure around the globe to discover exotic places, people, fine treasures and unique art. Student’s will explore different global destinations and focus on the art and culture of that people or region. Europe, India, Asia and Africa are just a broad overview of the possible destinations students will “visit” in this exciting multi-media class.

Influential Artists (Art History)

Come discover famous artists and movements throughout the ages! Kids will travel through time and study select art movements, artistic styles, and the artists that made them famous from the Renaissance to Post-Modern times. In each class, we will experiment with different art materials and create pieces in response to the artist and movements introduced.

Pop-Up Books for Kids (Bookmaking)

In this class students will learn how to illustrate, design and engineer one-of-a-kind pop-up books. Projects will start with simple single-fold pop-up book structures and move into multiple page pop-up books. Basic drawing, collage and painting techniques will be covered and writing skills encouraged.

Super Hero Costumes (Fibers)

Students need to bring one plain white t-shirt to the first day of class. Do you have an active imagination, like to dress up in costumes and pretend that you have super powers? Well guess what…so do we! In this class students will design and make their own superhero costumes including painted t-shirts, masks, capes and accessories. Using t-shirts, fabrics and other arts and crafts materials, students will create costumes that look like their favorite superheroes, or maybe you create your very own superhero.

This class will introduce students to various drawing materials; graphite, markers, colored pencils, oil and chalk pastels. Class projects will focus on still life observation, cartoons and children’s book illustration examples. Children will learn how to use line, shape, color and shadow to build an interesting and dynamic composition.

3-Dimensional Paintings

In this class students will create fun and vibrant 3-dimensional paintings using tag board, watercolor paper and cardboard. Tempera and acrylic paints will be used in combination with collage and basic relief sculpture techniques. Brush handling, color mixing, blending and stamping techniques will also be covered.

In this class students will embark on an adventure around the globe to learn about the art and cultures of other countries. In each class students will view different art pieces and techniques from different parts of the world. 3-Dimensional Tunnel Books (Bookmaking)

What’s a tunnel book you ask? They’re books with a 3-dimensional “stage-like” window containing different layers of images. Students will start by designing the image they want their book to show. Then we will separate the information into different foreground, mid-ground and background layers and construct the book. Basic drawing, collage and painting techniques will be covered and basic bookmaking skills developed.

In this class students will create one-of-a-kind handmade jewelry using colored linen threads, beads, decoupage, metals findings, Shrinky-Dinks, modified and found materials. Handmade beads, barrettes, bracelets, necklaces, and pendants are just a few of the possible projects. Come learn how to make beautiful and fun handcrafted jewelry you can wear anytime-anywhere.

Students must bring a bag lunch and snacks as needed for this all-day class. Have fun and let your imagination go wild in this fast paced full-day class! Children will learn basic theatre terminology, create their own play with a theatre artist, and create set pieces, costumes, props, and more with a visual artist for a unique all-around collaborative experience. Invite your family and friends to view the final presentation and show off your theatrical talents. The final performance will be from 3:00-3:30 PM on the last day of class.

In this class we will learn the process of illustrating a children’s book, from writing, layout, and sketching, to the final inking and binding process. You will be able to sketch an entire 12 page children’s book, and complete 3-5 illustrations using the media of your choice; graphite, pen and ink, colored pencils, watercolor and markers.

Students will deconstruct and re-construct clothing to create their own fabulous fashion designs. Students will also get the chance to make accessories to complement their new apparel.

Using handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques students will create a variety of functional and decorative ceramic ware. Three days will be devoted to the potter’s wheel and three days to handbuilding. Functional pieces will be glaze fired and some decorative pieces painted with acrylic. Because of the bisque and glaze firing process, some projects will need to be picked-up two-three weeks after the last class day. Projects not picked-up by Sept. 10 will be recycled.

Relief Printmaking

In this class students will learn the basics of relief block printmaking. Relief prints are created by cutting away material on a linoleum block to create a printable surface with positive and negative (cut-away) areas. Once cut, ink is rolled onto the linoleum blocks surface and transferred via friction onto paper. Students will design, cut and create their own blocks producing single- and multiple-color prints.

Acrylic Painting Techniques

In this fundamental painting class students will learn the basics of using acrylic paint. Various assignments will focus on how to mix and control gradations in color, stamp, blend, dry-brush, create washes, utilize collage, texturize and use acrylic modifiers. Specific observational and skill building goals will also be covered to instruct students on how to break down an image into simple shapes, dark and light, warm and cool colors and train the eye to see reflective light!

Theatre Arts

Students must bring a bag lunch and snacks as needed for this all-day class. Are you an extroverted or imaginative person who loves acting and creating? If so, then this is the class for you! This is a full-day class where students will develop, write and create a play from concept to finished piece. Students will spend the week writing their scripts, practicing their parts, designing costumes, props and the set. On the last class day students perform their play for family and friends from 3:00-3:30 PM.

Drawing to Painting

Collaborative Public Mural (painting)

In this class students will learn basic acrylic painting techniques while creating an 8 foot x 16 foot collaborative painted mural to be installed and displayed at Ridgedale Center in the Minnetonka Center for the Arts shop (2nd level next to Sears). Students will define the concept of the piece, design the image and layout, transfer the image onto masonite and paint it. Small skills projects will be produced for students to take home.

We’ll take our first steps into fashion design by creating custom accessories using sustainable and recycled fibers. After sketching our collection we’ll choose the color palette and fabrics. Students will design and roughly sketch an entire 12 page story and complete 5-6 illustrations using the media of their choice. We will explore the wide range of art materials used to create illustrations including; watercolor, India / colored ink, markers, pens and colored pencil. Students will define their illustrative style while exploring how different media change the mood within their stories.
