Holland, Bryan – Creative Collage and Mixed Media
Please have the following materials for the first day. Other materials may be required over the course.
- Heavyweight paper or illustration/mat board
- Scissors, utility knife or Xacto knife – for cutting paper and trimming, also bring replacement blades.
- Small amount of primer or acrylic latex paint if desired
- Brush assortment. Approx. 1 to 2 inch for applying acrylic medium.
- Old credit card or similar plastic tool. For applying collage material.
- Assortment of paper collage material (newspaper, photocopies (black and white OR color), laser print copies, tissue or wrapping paper, letters, maps, drawings, etc. NOTE: glossy and heavyweight paper can be difficult to work with, also, inkjet prints do not work well.)

- Photos, images, drawings, etc. These are reference images (not collage) for painting, drawing, etc., that will be used to finish the project.
- Painting supplies. Your preferred medium such as oil or acrylic, brushes, palette knives,
medium, cleaner, rags, etc. - Some drawing supplies. A small assortment of softer pencils such as 2B-6B, color pencils,
paint markers, whatever you have available. - Sponge. An inexpensive, general purpose sponge.
- NOTE that you will be provided with some acrylic medium, please bring an airtight container that will hold approx. 4-5 oz.
OPTIONAL SUPPLIES bring only if you have, don’t go out and purchase
- Sandpaper (If you have an assortment of 80-200 grit, please bring, otherwise will try to make some available).
- Stencils (decorative stencils, letters, etc.).
- Spray paint (if desired for stencils).
- Gloves (if you prefer to keep hands clean while working with acrylic medium, etc.)
- Ruler/metal straight edge. For cutting paper if necessary.
A FEW THOUGHTS
The collage process can be inherently unpredictable, with a lot of trial and error. Sometimes everything goes as planned, sometimes the results are even cooler than you expected, and, you guessed it, sometimes things just don’t turn out at all, forcing you to start over or try something different. A sense of adventure, patience and willingness to experiment is essential.
ABOUT THE COURSE
During the course, we will be exploring a variety of collage and image transfer techniques. Weekly demonstrations will be given, with time in class for students to work and receive help. Being that the class meets one time per week, students will have the time and opportunity to explore and experiment with many different techniques between class sessions.
