- Brushes – round & flat, medium-sized (#6)
- Acrylic or water-based oil paint in 8 oz. tubes (Liquitex, Golden, Winsor & Newton, others) Avoid “basics” or “student grade” if you can afford the better grade.
- cadmium yellow medium
- alizarin crimson
- ultramarine blue
- titanium white (large tube or get two small tubes)
- mars black
- cadmium orange
- dioxazine purple
- viridian green
- Any kind of palette knife for mixing paint
- Palette – “Stay-wet” palettes are useful to keep paint moist between sessions. This palette is a plastic box with lid and a sponge inside. Get the large 12″ x 16″ size if you decide to go this route. An alternative is to get a roll of freezer paper or paper plates with a waxy coating from the grocery store. Some people use plastic ice cube trays and cover them with plastic wrap.
- 8 painting surfaces – 11″ x 14″ (bring one to the first class). Any of the following are acceptable (don’t need to get anything fancy/expensive at this point)
- stretched canvas
- canvas boards
- hard boards
- canvasette (canvas paper)
- Artist tape or masking tape
- Ruler or straight edge
- Water container (fairly large, for rinsing brushes) Peanut butter jar size at a minimum.
- Roll of paper towels or a rag
- Paper & pencil for sketching and note-taking
- Soap for washing brushes
- A tote bag or some kind of way to carry everything (some people use a cardboard box for carrying home wet paintings)
- Apron or old shirt to keep paint off your clothes
