Neuse, Jon – Color Workshop

I’m looking forward to meeting and working with you as we explore the dynamics of color.  Here is a list of materials you need to bring to the class. You may work in acrylics, oil, watercolor paints or oil or soft pastels.  If you have any questions about the class or materials email me at jonneuse@gmail.com.

Acrylic and oil paints or watercolors: 4-ounce tubes or about 118 mml each of any paint.  Different brands of paint have different names for their colors.  Bring at least one of any red, yellow, blue, orange, green or purple plus a titanium white.  It’s best to get tubes that are opaque, as noted on the labels.

**If working with oil paint you must bring and use only odorless mineral spirits for your cleaning solvent.

Any store or website will have a variety of brands, colors and qualities.  Buy what your budget can allow but know that cheaper paints contain less color pigment in volume. A starter set containing primary and secondary colors in any of the mediums should be adequate for this workshop.  If a set does not include Titanium White, add a separate tube of Titanium White to your purchase.  Any hardware store will have odorless mineral spirits.

Pastels: If you wish to work in oil or soft pastels, bring at least a beginner set of 12 or more colors.  Oil pastels will require a solvent of odorless mineral spirits.

Papers/Canvases for acrylics or oils: Acrylic or Oil users bring single sheets or a pad of 100# (270gsm) Vellum • Smooth • 9”x12” or 14”x17” • Any brand.  Canvases: There are a variety of canvas products available: stretched preprimed canvas, canvas boards or canvas papers.  Choose the size you wish.  If you’re just beginning start with smaller canvases of 5’x7’ up to 11”x14”.

Papers for watercolors: If working in watercolor several single sheets or a pad of 140# (300 gsm) or heavier watercolor papers.  9”x12” or 14”x17” size. Any brand.

Papers for pastels: Several medium texture grade (about 500) of single sheets, or a standard sanded pastel paper pad. 9”x12” or 14”x17” size. Any brand.

Brushes: For oil or water media bring a variety of inexpensive brushes.  Paper towels for drying brushes and a palette knife.  Water can for cleaning brushes.
