Welcome to Art + Therapy with Emily Niemeyer, MA, BCaBA. I am looking forward to having
you in class with me! Together, we will reflect and create as we move towards greater self
understanding and freedom.
This class is for you. Whether you go out and purchase materials or search for supplies at
home, be mindful of what you are drawn to and what calls to you.
The only “must-haves” for our first class is a bound notebook of mixed media paper and
supplies that help you to get images onto the paper or canvas. If you have a variety of art
supplies, please bring those. If you prefer one particular medium, that works too. We will expand
and explore together throughout this course.

Suggested items for the first day of class:
-Mixed Media Pad (bound or spiral) any size.
-Paint brushes
-Paint
-Pencil, Pen or both
-Notebook or journal
-Colored pencils or pastels
-Palette of any type
On the first day of class, we will discuss the different ways that we can create art for therapeutic
purposes and what supplies might be helpful for you going forward.
See you soon!
Emily

Note: Bring the watercolor supplies you already have.

Supplies

Hairdryer (A must to expedite drying between glazes)

Drawing pencil – 2B

Artist tape of masking tape

Ruler

2 containers for water

A roll of paper towels (Viva works the best)

Palette (watercolor palette with large areas for mixing)

Small pump spray bottle

Masking fluid

Synthetic brushes for masking

Rubber cement eraser & soft eraser

PLEASE BRING A DRAWING BOARD SURFACE ON WHICH TO TAPE OR FASEN YOUR WATERCOLOR PAPER

Paint

I also recommend the following professional grade tube colors. These colors are transparent and work well for learning this glazing technique.

Permanent Rose

Alizarin Crimson Rose Madder

Winsor Yellow

New Gamboge

Aureolin

Quinacridone Gold

Winsor Violet

Ultra Marine Blue

Cobalt blue

Winsor Blue (or Prussian Blue)

Hookers Green

Viridian

Brushes

Bring the brushes you have.

½ “ -1 “ flat wash watercolor brush

#2,4,6,8,10,12 Round watercolor brushes

Paper

Please purchase professional-grade paper. Your results with this glazing technique will be worth the investment. My favorite is # 140 lb. cold pressed Kilimanjaro (bright) purchased from Cheap Joes. However, for this workshop 140# cold press Arches, Winsor Newton, Fabriano, or Lananquarelle work.

You might want to consider purchasing a Cold pressed Watercolor block ( Arches, Fabriano, Lanaquarelle, or Winsor Newton. 9” x 12” size or larger works well.

Bring scrap watercolor paper to test your glazes on.

Plan on having fun. Learning how to use glazing techniques to create reflective light into your work is worth the effort. The results are amazing!

FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME BEFORE THE WORKSHOP IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS

I have worked with Gouache for 40 years. Gouache is an opaque cousin of watercolor. Watercolor is a stain and Gouache is paint

There are many brands of paint. My favorite is Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache

To work in black and white, students can start with Titanium White and Ivory Black

Add color with this palette: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red Light, and Ultramarine Blue. (Great way to learn to mix color)

Or start with any colors, student’s choice

Brushes for gouache are the same as watercolor brushes. Good brushes are a must. Rounds and Flats. Not bristle brushes

Plastic palette or ordinary dinner plate

Water container

Pencils and erasers

Best surface is Illustration Board. Watercolor paper is ok (not hot press)

Professional Grade tube watercolors – Good choices of brands include: Winsor Newton, Holbein, Daniel Smith, DaVinci, or M. Graham

Recommended Colors: These are colors that I work with, but you may have colors in your paint box that will work just fine. What you should have is a warm and cool version of the three primary colors.

Please bring a board to attach your paper to and Artists tape. (Art Center will have some boards available for the workshop if you don’t have anything.)

Glassine or Freezer paper will protect your finished artwork.

Bring some of your own photographs (landscapes preferred) especially those that have meaning to you. It is best to work from photos that have strong contrast, both darks, and lights. Hint, usually landscapes start from about 30 feet in front of you. Cynthia will provide some images as well.

You can look forward to Cynthia sharing her knowledge so that you may discover the luminosity of this pure pigment and capture the spirit of pastels.
